SITE INFORMATION

YMCA São Paulo
The YMCA of Sao Paulo, founded on the 23th of December, 1902, has 50,000 members and an annual budget of 30 million US dollars. Its income comes mostly from membership fees and donations from several sectors of the community. About 20% of its expenses with social projects are supported by local governments and international organizations.  It is organized into 31 branches (12 of them include YMCA health and wellness facilities, 19 are community development centers) and one seasonal camp. YMCA programs focus on youth development, reaching diverse sectors of the city and its surrounding areas. The YMCA outreach programs are highly recognized and some of the YMCA innovations are considered models among the NGO community. An example is the YMCA “Circus School” (youth development through arts, music, sports, etc) in Vila Ré.

The YMCA of Sao Paulo is also recognized by other YMCAs in South America by the creation of “Y-Fitness”, a YMCA package of 11 programs that are updated every 3 months (including training and delivery of DVDs) with new exercises, choreography and music (somewhat similar to Les Mills “Body System” but based in Brazilian culture). The “Y-Fitness” lab is led by a very impressive and motivated team of young YMCA fitness professionals. Its international liaisons with countries around the globe empower volunteers, members and staff to respond to the challenges of the world today.  Another interesting recent development of the YMCA of Sao Paulo is their concept of “Campus Y”, an initiative to further engage teens and young adults in the YMCA.
